2013 State Teen Action Representative Retreat (STARR) STARRt’s the Ripple Effect

2013 State Teen Action Representative Retreat (STARR) STARRt’s the Ripple Effect
The 2013 STARR event was held on April 12th – 14th, 2013  and it was a success! There were more than 30 presenters on topics related to the three mission mandates: civic engagement, healthy living, and science, technology, engineering and math. Some new and exciting workshops included Mercy Flight where Mercy Flight Central staff toured workshop participants around a helicopter that landed on the NYS Fairgrounds. ATV Safety allowed program participants to go through an online course from the ATV Safety Institute. In addition,  the Exploring Veterinary Profession workshop was offered so that students could ask questions about vet careers and learn to suture.
All of the workshops were offered by educators, Cornell undergraduate and graduate students, 4-H alumni and Cornell faculty. There were 217 participants representing 36 counties and our theme: “STARRt the Ripple Effect” was realized in the action plans of the 4-H’ers, educators, and volunteers alike that attended. Click the link VID00009.MP4VID00009.MP4 for a video on what 4-H means to a 4-H’er from New York City!
Special thanks to Martina Noone, Warren County, Rachel Williams, Seneca County, and 4-H alum; Dana Jane Thomas. A formal thanks to all of the members of the 2013 STARR planning committee; this event was successful because of your expertise. The t-shirt above was designed by Elyse, a 2013 STARR Planning Committee Member.
Please join us again in 2014 for STARR and be sure to contact Martina Noone if you are interested in joining the planning committee.
