4-H Dairy Teams Off to a Great Start

The New York 4-H Dairy Teams are off to a great start this year with 2 of the 3 State teams winning 1st place honors so far.
This year’s NY State 4-H Dairy Challenge Team was composed of  Peter Gartung, Otsego Co.; Erik Shelmidine, Jefferson Co; Heidi VanLieshout, Oneida Co.; Hunter Calyer, Orange Co. and coached by Cathy Galley, Otsego Co. The team competed and became the 1st place team at the Junior Dairy Management Contest in  Harrisburg, PA. Erik Shelmidine was 3rd place individual overall, Hunter Calyer was 7th place individual overall and Peter Gartung was 10th place individual overall.  Congratulations for a job well done.
The NY State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team also competed in Harrisburg, PA at the Invitational Youth Judging Contest at the All-American Show and was named the 6th place team. Congratulations to team members: Miquela Hanselman, Delaware Co.; Andy Chlus, Herkimer Co.; Heidi VanLieshout, Oneida Co.; Margaret McKernan, Franklin Co. and their coach Dr. Doug Waterman. Miquela Hanselman was 3rd place individual overall, Heidi Vanlieshout was 23rd, Andy Chlus was 36th, and Margaret McKernan was the teams alternate. 
The NY State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team who competed in Madison, WI for the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest competed against 28 other States and won the contest.  The team was 1st place team overall  and 1st place team in oral reasons. Their coach was Dr. Doug Waterman. Andrew Reynolds, Orleans Co., was 3rd high individual overall, Emma Andrew, Wayne Co., was 6th high individual overall, Cassie Stap, Orange Co., was 18th high individual, and Meghan Vaill was the teams alternate.   For the Reasons placings; Cassie Stap was 2nd overall, Emma Andrew was 4th overall, and Andrew Reynolds was 13th  overall giving NY tops score for Oral Reasons.  Congratulations for an awesome job.  

Another dairy success is the Cornell Collegiate Dairy Judging Team coached by Dr. David Galton also won the National contest in Madison for 2011.

NY State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team who traveled to Louisville, KY for the North American International Livestock Exposition Invitational 4-H Judging Contest took 4th honors in the contest against 21 other states.  Devon Simpsons was 8th individual overall all and Adam Buckenmeyer was 10th high individual.  The team was also 7th high team for oral reasons.  Congratulations on an great job. The team members include: Devon Simpson, Orange Co., Danielle Bartlett, Fulton Co., Adam Buckenmeyer, Wyoming Co., Logan Martin, Cattaraugus Co., and Coach-Jamie Flint from Wyoming Co.
NY State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team who competed at the National Invitational 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest held at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville,  KY took 2nd honors against 17 other states.  The team worked really hard and left the final match with a 2nd place finish by 10 points.  Instead of the individual question phase to our State contest, participants in Louisville take a 50 question written test on Friday evening and the top ten individuals on the written test are recognized at the awards banquet.  It is very impressive to have all 4 of our team members in the top 5: Casey Porter was second high individual, Jesse Bonin was 3rd high individual, Justine Bishop was 4th high individual, and Katie Oster was 5th high individual.  Congratulations on an awesome job. This year’s outstanding team consisted of team members: Jesse Bonin, Columbia Co., Katie Oster, Madison Co., Casey Porter, Jefferson Co., and Justine Bishop, Delaware Co. The team was coached by Debbie Grusenmeyer, Cornell University and Matt Young, Ontario Co.
