Finger Lakes Dairy Pioneers, Cayuga County

Cayuga County’s Dairy Pioneers program gives youth ages 13-15 a chance to fully explore the dairy industry. Various tours, trips, speakers, and activities introduce youth to all aspects of milk production and handling, helping to develop in the teens a full understanding of what skills it takes to be in the dairy industry, the realities and considerations behind running a dairy business, and the breadth of career options in agriculture. Youth visited SUNY Morrisville, a dairy processing plant in Syracuse, NY, various local farms and businesses, and Cornell University, where they worked with faculty in CALS Dept. of Animal Science and faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine. From conducting necropsies to making dairy foods and milking cows, this program truly gives 4-H youth a foot-up in the dairy industry and prepares them to be future leaders in the field.
